Your dog knows "sit" in the kitchen. The problem is the front door, the leash, the other dog across the street, and the moment you actually need him to listen. A dog that behaves at home but falls apart the second there's something interesting isn't a stubborn dog — he just hasn't been taught to hold it together where it counts.

Good Dog Boston trains adult dogs in your home and on your real streets, using reward-based methods and no aversives. We come to you and build reliability in the exact places you need it — your doorway, your sidewalk, your walk — because that's where obedience actually has to work.

Is this the right program?

Adult Obedience is built for grown dogs who are good-natured but not yet reliable — the ones who know the words but don't listen when it matters.

  • Your dog pulls on the leash and walks are a workout, not a break.
  • Recall is optional — he comes when he feels like it.
  • Jumping, door-dashing, or counter-surfing are daily battles.
  • He's fine at home but ignores you around dogs, people, or distractions.

If your dog is barking, lunging, or reacting out of fear or aggression, Behavior Modification is the better fit — see below.

What we work on

Every plan is customized after your free evaluation, but Adult Obedience typically builds reliable, real-world behavior:

  • Loose-leash walking — walks without the pulling, lunging, and zig-zag.
  • Reliable recall — a "come" that works even when something better is happening.
  • Sit, down & stay with real duration — holds that last through distraction, not just in the living room.
  • Place & settle — a calm off-switch for the door, dinner, and guests.
  • Door & greeting manners — no jumping, no bolting, polite hellos.
  • Impulse control — leave-it, wait, and self-control around food, dogs, and temptation.

Not sure this is the one?

Adult Obedience is our core training program. Depending on your dog's age and what you're facing, these may fit better:

Common questions

Is my dog too old to train?

No. Adult dogs learn well with reward-based methods — the old "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" line just isn't true. Grown dogs often progress quickly because they focus better than puppies.

Do you come to my home?

Yes. All sessions are in your home and on your streets throughout Greater Boston — we don't run a facility you drive to. We build reliability in the exact spots you need it.

What methods do you use?

Reward-based training with no aversives — no shock, prong, or intimidation. It builds a dog who chooses to listen rather than one who's just afraid not to.

How involved do I need to be?

Very — and that's the point. We coach you as much as your dog, so the results stick after we're gone. Your trainer stays reachable between sessions if questions come up.

Ready for a dog who listens?

Tell us what's not working — the leash, the recall, the door. We'll build the plan around your dog and your streets.
